The Mandarin Jacket

Princess seam, semi-fitted mandarin collar jacket with optional tailored version that has buttoned front flap, pocket flaps and back slits with button details. The ruffled version is made without the collar, has front ties and a frayed-edge gathered ruffle around all the edges.

1 yard fabric (jacket front and back)
3/4 yard fabric (sleeves)
2/3 yard fabric (side front and side back) 1/6 yard fabric (collar)
2 1/4 yards fabric (lining)
8 3/4” buttons

RUFFLED JACKET
2 1/3 yards fabric (jacket)
2 1/4 yards fabric (lining)
1/3 yards fabric (ruffle)
thread

TAILORED JACKET
3 yards fabric (jacket)
2 1/4 yards fabric (lining)
1/4 yard fusible interfacing
13 1/2” buttons
thread

OPTIONAL 2 yards thin cotton batting (interlining)

Suitable Fabrics

We used cottons (Free Spirit fabric – Freshcut and Rowan fabrics– Lotus) for the mandarin and ruffled versions on the front cover and linen for our tailored version on the back. Corduroy, twill, tweed and wool would work as well. We used cotton voile (Robert Kaufman fabrics) for the frayed-edge ruffle in the ruffled version.
