Give the gift of Favorite Things

Who doesn’t love to sew for baby? Some of our Favorite Things to sew are for those precious, squishy, cuddly bundles of joy we have in our family.

One lucky Little is going to to fed, changed and slept in style this Christmas. Our secretary Sue has put together a wonderful gift set including Hushabye Baby for her granddaughter. Giving and receiving the gift of handmade has got to be absolute best!

What are you making this Christmas to give?

A favorite way to decorate

One of the quickest ways to add a bit of Christmas cheer into your home is by sprucing up your window sills with potted plants in seasonal colors. Cut flowers are so lovely too, but aren’t enjoyable for as long as potted ones. This year as pictured, Leslie went with Kalanchoe plants in a bright red for a pop of color in her kitchen. Mini poinsettias, the Christmas rose, Baby Cypress trees or even red pepper plants would be festive as well.

Wishing you a colorful Christmassy day!

A good little reminder

Anyone who knows me, know I cannot wait for anything. When a package arrived in the mail for my daughter, from my mother who lives across the country, I wanted to let her open it right away instead of waiting till Christmas. I waited approximately 2 weeks…and thought this morning would be a perfect time to open one of the packages (yes I did know what was inside).

Oddly, Amy let me open her present and then carefully watched as I pulled out each piece from the box containing a Little People Nativity set. She listened as I explained each and every one. I began to peel back the tape and plastic off of baby Jesus and thought about how much times have changed since the birth of Jesus thousands of years ago.

As I displayed each piece, I had to tell myself to listen to what I was saying.  I think children often teach us and remind us of the most important things. I really shouldn’t need a plastic nativity set to teach me that  I don’t  have to let commercialism ruin or rule my heart or have precedence in my home. It is just all too easy to get caught up in the swirl of activity this time of year.

The best thing about learning what I did, this morning is that I can still remember and focus on what the true holiday season is really about, you can too! All I have to do is turn my eyes to the little babe in the manger and remember what a joyous time of celebration it really is.

Wishing you a joy-filled day!

Our favorite rendition of “Drummer Boy”

According to CBC:

Quigley, 16, was moved to create the video because of the underlying message of the song. “Drummer Boy speaks to me so much,” he said. “The whole song is a story. It’s about this boy who gets word of Jesus being born and he goes to see him and he doesn’t have anything to give him; he’s like ‘I don’t have money, I don’t have gifts to give you. But I can play my drum and that’s more than enough’.”

The teen’s production is all the more remarkable considering he played all the instruments, sang the vocals, recorded everything and directed and edited the video.

Remarkable indeed… Hope you have a meaningful day!

A new favorite craft

Snow globes! You can make them on your own…Being able to create your own cozy, wintry scene was so much fun! I could see a little bit of my 2 year old daughter’s imagination going once she saw that her carefully   picked grabbed dollar store figurines were floating around in a sparkly, snowy wonderland.

There are many tutorials on the Internet on how to do this, but here is my simplified version. You’ll need:

  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Plastic figurines
  • Glitter
  • Water
  • Old jam jars or canning jars
  • Fake snow
  • A few drops of glycerin for each jar (so the glitter doesn’t fall too quickly)

Smaller figurines will sit lower in the jar, so you’ll need to build them up with hot glue. I covered the hot glue with fake snow.

Fill up your jars with water, a TBSP of glycerin and glitter and insert your scene upside down. Twist on your cap and voila! Some reccomend applying a epoxy to make sure the water doesn’t leak out, but mine have been good without. You can also decorate your lid by painting it with an oil based paint or gluing christmas ribbon, or buttons to it.

These have become one of my new favorite vignettes in my home. There is something a little magical about glitter and snow falling inside a jar. When I watch my daughter look at them, I feel like I’m her age all over again.

Where will you find ‘sparkle’ in your day today?

A favorite recipe ~for relaxation

Seasons greetings and a warm welcome back to all of you. Last year was so much fun, so we’ve thoughtfully brainstormed a whole other list of some more favorite things to share with you. We trust you are all cozy and enjoying all the wonder and beauty this time of year has to offer. The trees are all up around here and we are all savoring the sparkle of Christmas.

We’re starting off Day 1 with a little recipe for relaxation.

After testing and bubbling and fizzing all the family members till we were permanently pruney- Leslie has perfected a wonderfully moisturizing, perfectly bubbly, fizzy, yummy smelling recipe for bath bombs! (Nobody was harmed in the testing of these, we all actually thoroughly enjoyed it!)

If you decide to make a batch I can guarantee after trying one for yourself, you’ll want to keep the whole recipe. But they also make wonderful gifts! It’s so much fun to create your own little package and even slap a homemade label on them. They are fun and safe to do with kids, or make girls night out of it! Here we go:

Bubbling Fizzy Bath Bombs

  • 2c. baking soda
  • 1c. citric acid
  • 1c. cornstarch
  • 2/3 c. sodium laureth sulfoacetate (optional: this is what makes the bubbles!)
  • ½ c. Epsom salts
  • ½ c. sea salt

Sift above together in a large bowl.

  • Add : 1T. grated cocoa butter.

Mix together in a squirt bottle:

  • 4 t. water
  • ½ t. borax
  • Add some food coloring if desired.

Add to the squirt bottle and mix by swirling:

  • 2 T. fractionated coconut oil
  • 2 T. jojaba oil or canola oil
  • 1 T. fragrance oil (optional: this is what makes them smell delicious!)

Add the contents of the squirt bottle to the dry ingredients and stir quickly with a wooden spoon. Add additional water from a spray bottle a little at a time and stir well each time just until the mixture will hold its shape when a handful of it is  squeezed in your hands. Press firmly into molds. Carefully release from mold onto cooling rack. Let dry overnight. Enjoy!!

Wishing you a warm and bubbly day! See you all tomorrow…

The Duffle Coat

We did do a little more than just enjoy these all summer long.

This fall we’re releasing two new patterns: The Duffle Coat and The Little Duffle Coat. With a reoccurring request for adult and children’s clothes, we thought it was time for something cute and casual and for the kids– unisex!

If your familiar with sewing our patterns, you’ll notice some similarities to the Hooded Jacket. Its comfy fit and easy to install zipper is truly a thing of beauty. We’ve added pockets, arm tabs, and trim to make this coat unique. If you experience cold winters like we do up here in Canada (eh?), lining The Duffle Coat with something fuzzy makes it cozy and warm. For a lighter version, we experimented with 2 layers of cotton and found it it makes up beautifully and feels good too!

You can really start to have fun with the toggles or buttons and loops you choose to put on your coat! You can buy pre-made toggle sets (here’s a place we found) but we also had fun chopping up old leather purses to make our own. If that’s not your thing, stitched bias or cord with fun buttons is such a great alternative.

We wont be at Fall Quilt Market this year, so we wanted to get the word out a tad early. Follow up with your Distributors for ordering info. They should(crossing our fingers) be ready to ship early November. Hope your all having a wonderful Autumn Day.
